For Christmas 2009 I thought that it would be a wise marketing idea to send Christmas cards to 400 of my patient base. I wanted to combine thanking my existing patients with an initiative for them to refer new patients. Sometimes potential clients come to us looking for advice on advertising their product or service. On many occasions they may have tried advertising before and been disappointed with the results or the lack of return on their investment. What are the most common mistakes businesses make when advertising? What are the 5 things any business should consider before they advertise?
1. Repetition: On average people need to see (or hear) an advertisement 7 times before they act on it. It takes a few times for the advertisement to register with the viewer and a few more before they will act on it. Therefore it is better to run several smaller insertions of an ad instead of going for one large more expensive full page insertion.
2. Targeting: Businesses need to make sure that their ad is targeted correctly and placed accordingly. There's not much point placing an ad for a Steakhouse in a vegetarian magazine. Seems obvious but frequently the media picked by advertisers is not carefully considered.
3. Integration: It is very important to make sure that your advertising campaign is integrated. This means that if you are advertising a new product or special offer in a newspaper it should also be reflected on your website, facebook page etc. Also, are your staff aware of your advertising campaign and able to respond accordingly if a potential customer enquiry comes in?
4. Call to action: There needs to be a 'call to action' on your advertising. What do you want potential customers to do when they see your advertising? Do you want them to call a specific number? Should they email an address or should they visit a page on your website?
5. Design: The advertising needs to be well-designed, well-branded and communicate your message accordingly. Amateurish, poorly designed advertising will not inspire confidence in your company. If there is no impact it will not get noticed. If it is poorly branded your company may not be remembered and you could be advertising for the competition.
