As a Staff Officer, I have worked closely with 21 Managers over the years and I can only say that every Manager should possess good Coaching Skills. Unlike many training courses where the content is soon forgotten I have found the coaching most useful in its practicality. The most challenging part of business today is the constant rate of change and while bespoke computers packages and systems are very important, it's the ability to bring staff to the next level which poses the greatest challenge. I find coaching a most valuable method in raising awareness, finding common ground and brining all the different departments together as one team. The listening skills are also of great value and staff now feel that there input is recognized, appreciated and understood. I greatly enjoyed the Business and Personal Coaching course run by the ILI. I found the Diploma Course in Personal and Business Coaching with the Irish Lifecoach Institute to be excellent on a number of different levels. The course content challenged me on a daily basis to look beyond the obvious and to find the resources within myself to further develop the skills required in a very busy H.R. Department. The facilitators promoted huge self awareness together with effective planning on a step by step basis. Good clear communication skills were encouraged, as was the reviewing of decisions taken. A sense of excellence towards everything you do together with an encouragement to life-long learning. I consider the skills learned during this course to be of considerable value in my day to day work.
My current role in my company is as a Training Supervisor where I train about 70 staff in Fund Services, specifically Transfer Agency/Shareholder Services. The Diploma course has proved to be a huge benefit to me in my Training role as it has totally changed the way I do things! I now train most courses through coaching and facilitation. I have also been able to coach some staff in relation to improving their performance at work which has been very useful. The response from staff to coaching and facilitation has been brilliant, now they get involved and can come up with their own solutions to issues or they get a chance to tell me what they know, not the other way around. An added benefit has been that I have also been able to more effectively coach staff around workplace issues such as lack of assertiveness, dealing with challenging colleagues etc. The feedback from my course attendees has been hugely positive and I am finding that retention of information and training has been much better since I adapted a coaching framework for the training. The content of the diploma was broad enough to include the set up of coaching practices etc so it has been invaluable. All in all I would recommend the course to anyone involved in a role of training/educating/facilitating etc. Once you start adopting a coaching framework in a training role, the stress levels and exhaustion go down and the retention rate and job satisfaction goes way up.
